Discover history with the Montreal Aviation Museum

Exploring history can sometimes reveal previously unknown links between individuals that create a special bond. When aviation historian George Fuller was researching his father’s military history, he discovered such a link.  His investigations revealed that during World War I both his father and the uncle of an acquaintance named Bill Doran were aerial observers. Furthermore, they flew in the same type of aircraft, a Royal Aircraft Factory R.E.8, and in the same squadron of the Royal Flying Corps.

The aviation connection does not end there. Bill Doran was a founding member and leading volunteer of the Montreal Aviation Museum (MAM). Prior to that he worked at Canadair and was subsequently the principal of the aviation maintenance training program at John Abbott College.

To commemorate this piece of local aviation history, another leading volunteer at the museum —Bruce McLeod— built a highly detailed 1/32 scale model of an R.E.8 aircraft which is now on display at the MAM. He remarked, “As part of the ‘We Build Heritage’ program commemorating those who served, it was an honour for me to have had the opportunity to research the details of this aircraft and build the model for Mr. Doran and Mr. Fuller.”
