Acquisition of 18 Super Hornet Fighter for the Canadian Armed Forces

Montréal, Wednesday, November 23, 2016 - Following yesterday’s announcement by the Government of Canada regarding the planned acquisition of 18 Boeing Super Hornet fighter jets, Suzanne M. Benoît, Aéro Montréal’s President, has issued the following statement on behalf of members and partners of Québec’s aerospace cluster:

This announcement is encouraging for our industry and the companies that make up our supply chain.
Since we do not yet know the exact terms and conditions of the contract, we must wait to assess the concrete benefits this announcement will have for our companies.

However, Boeing has already given assurances in the past that industrial and technological benefits will be given to Canadian suppliers. We can therefore expect that the maintenance of the aircraft will be performed in Canada. In this regard, Québec is well positioned for all aspects of services support and other specialized areas related to this type of aircraft since we have world-class suppliers amongst our supply chain.

The direct and indirect contributions of the defence and security sector to Canada’s GDP totals $9.5 billion, of which $2.3 billion comes from Québec alone. The sector is also an important creator of quality jobs with high added value for the economy.
